{"id":3020,"date":"2019-04-21T21:34:57","date_gmt":"2019-04-22T05:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tbc.chhongbi.org\/?p=3020"},"modified":"2020-10-26T08:15:55","modified_gmt":"2020-10-26T16:15:55","slug":"taiwanese-will-not-fall-for-chinese-mendacity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tbc.chhongbi.org\/?p=3020","title":{"rendered":"Taiwanese will not fall for Chinese mendacity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Taiwanese\nwill not fall for Chinese mendacity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Tseng Kuei-hi,\nWilliam Harn, Tiunn Hok Chu, Weng Ming-jang<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jan. 6 edition of\nthe China Times, a China-friendly newspaper published in Taiwan, carried a\nfront-page article targeting President Tsai Ing-wen (\u8521\u82f1\u6587) under the extra-large\nheadline: \u201cTsai is deceiving the international community.\u201d The article criticizes Tsai\u2019s response to\nwhat Chinese President Xi Jingping (\u7fd2\u8fd1\u5e73) said about the so-called \u201c1992 consensus\u201d and\nthe \u201cone country, two systems\u201d model in his Jan. 2 speech to mark the 40th\nanniversary of China\u2019s \u201cMessage to Compatriots in Taiwan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We cannot help\nwondering whether the China Times published this article on the orders of its\nbehind-the-scenes boss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her New Year\u2019s Day\naddress, Tsai criticized China, in very moderate terms, over its handling of\nwidespread outbreaks of African swine fever. \u201cIf we can\u2019t even have sincere\ncooperation on epidemic prevention and treatment, how can we talk about both\nsides of the Taiwan Strait being one family?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tsai wants the\nChinese government to pay serious attention to the spread of African swine\nfever in China, in view of the serious threat that it poses to Taiwan\u2019s\nagriculture and the livelihoods of Taiwanese farmers. She hopes that China can\nhonestly and accurately report the status of its epidemic to the World\nOrganisation for Animal Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Council of\nAgriculture and related agencies are naturally very eager to prevent African\nswine fever from spreading to Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day after Tsai\u2019s\nNew Year\u2019s Day address, Xi delivered his \u201cMessage to Compatriots\u201d anniversary\nspeech, and Tsai immediately responded, stating categorically that \u201cTaiwan\nabsolutely will not accept \u2018one country, two systems\u2019\u201d and that \u201cwe have never\naccepted the \u20181992 consensus.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her statements, which\nclearly express that democracy is Taiwan\u2019s greatest consensus, have won the\nsupport and applause of the vast majority of Taiwanese. Friends of Taiwan in\nmany countries have also posted messages on the Internet expressing their\naffirmation and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also wish to\nexpress our strong support for Tsai\u2019s statements, and to explain the determined\npoints she put forward, undeterred by pressure coming from a powerful nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYesterday Tibet,\ntoday Hong Kong.\u201d Be it \u201cboth sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one family\u201d\nor the \u201c1992 consensus,\u201d these \u201cpasswords\u201d are all poisonous baits laid down by\nChina to package its \u201cone country, two systems\u201d formula and force Taiwan to\naccept it at some time in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tsai therefore\nclearly and unequivocally told China and the international community that\nTaiwan rejects the \u201cone country, two systems\u201d framework and that democracy is\nTaiwan\u2019s greatest consensus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tsai has simply done\nwhat she is supposed to do, in her role as Taiwan\u2019s president, to safeguard\nTaiwan\u2019s sovereignty and protect Taiwanese.
