Michael Porter, Taiwan and China<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was quite disappointed with Professor Porter\u2019s\u00a0 visit to Taiwan\u00a0 on April 8th<\/sup>.\u00a0 He is a very famous authority and business consultant in the field called competitive strategy.\u00a0 Tracing all his talks in Taiwan, I could only come up with 3 words : ECFA Is Good .\u00a0 Instead of a Master consultant, he\u2019s more like a sales director of a consulting firm.<\/p>\n

Before landing at Taiwan, he should have information that ECFA is currently a very big controversy there.\u00a0 OK, assuming that\u2019s his character and he doesn\u2019t care about being diplomatic with the locals.\u00a0 But on the professional level, he should have been informed about certain important information about the on going negotiations.\u00a0 He lectured Taiwanese that ECFA is just the START, which will help signing FTAs with ASEAN nations.\u00a0 We are all sick and tired of that kind of sales pitch. The words already leaked all over the island that the Chinese were very firm that they would never sign any page containing those words.\u00a0 Some one in KMT should have the decency to brief him.\u00a0 In Taiwanese eyes, it does not look dignified for a \u201cHar-var-do\u201d\u00a0 professor to act like that.<\/p>\n

I would also like to advise him, if I had the opportunity, not to lecture Taiwanese \u201c There is no RISK(or nothing to fear)\u00a0 to sign X with the Chinese, to deal about\u2026. etc. etc.\u201d\u00a0 No American, and actually, no other people in the world , know about the risks of dealing with the Chinese better than the Taiwanese.<\/p>\n

Well, forget about the Grand Master for a moment.\u00a0 Let\u2019s review the scorecards of\u00a0 some other Americans\u2019 dealing with the communist countries.\u00a0 Remember the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union?\u00a0 For a moment, the communists thought the capitalism was superior.\u00a0 When their economy and currency collapsed, US and IMF suggested the countries like Russia and Poland, to hire the ivy league professor consultants, some Nobel laureate. The American consultants used some fancy tools, such as Shock Therapy.\u00a0 The results? The consultants themselves were shocked to find that they failed.\u00a0 Their scores are Fs.<\/p>\n

Fast backward to Dec. 45.\u00a0 Some Taiwanese thought George Marshall was an economist (another consultant?) due to Marshall Plan (\u7f8e\u63f4).\u00a0 He\u2019s actually a general, called the Organizer of Victory by Churchill.\u00a0 He\u2019s the boss of MacArthur and Eisenhower.\u00a0 He was sent by Truman to China to broker a coalition government between KMT and Mao.\u00a0 The Results?\u00a0 He failed again, was back at DC in Jan.47.<\/p>\n

Any success story, please?\u00a0 OK, Henry Kissinger in 1971 to China.\u00a0 Unlike the consultants and generals, when he deals with the communists, he thinks only in politics.\u00a0 I think Obama has learned some lessons too.<\/p>\n
